12) Why is the full rooting in of the slab important? A substrate mat has a smaller volume than soil. However, the roots will then need to be able to make full use of the volume, since plants need all their roots to accommodate the extra evaporation caused by abrupt changes in the weather. Consequently, a substrate that does not offer a 100% potential rooting volume will pose major risks when changes in the weather cause great fluctuations in the amount of evaporation. Back to FAQ's
